Things You Should Know Before Choosing New Cabinets For Your Kitchen

Remodelling your house, or even a part of your house is a daunting task. From looking for the right contractors to choosing the right materials and design, everything requires time, effort and energy.

Nevertheless, if you do enough research and consider the right factors, the task is made much easier. The same goes for choosing the right kitchen cabinet. There are several factors that you have to keep in mind when choosing new cabinets for your kitchen or dining area.

Since the bulk of your kitchen items go into the cabinets, you have to consider everything from functionality to durability before finalizing the design and material. In this blog, we have discussed in detail some of the crucial factors that can help you decide on what type of kitchen cabinets to get.

Types Of Cabinets

There are three main types of cabinets that most wood companies deal with. These are:

  • Stock Cabinets
  • Custom Cabinets
  • Semi-Custom Cabinets

Stock cabinets are mass-produced in factories and are sold at most home improvement centres. They are pre-assembled and are ready to install. They are the least expensive option, however, there is no room for customization. You have to choose from the already available designs and colours.

Custom cabinets, on the other hand, can be built according to the size and design requirements of your kitchen. They are usually built with unique features which makes them costly.

Semi-custom cabinets are a combination of stock and custom cabinets. They are basically stock cabinets that come with certain details and options. These allow you to semi-customize the cabinets based on your requirements.

Size

Before you move on to choosing the type and design of cabinets you want, it is important that you consider the size of kitchen utensils, gadgets and cookware you will be storing in them.

Evaluate what is wrong with your current cabinets and what kind of changes you would like for your new cabinets. Based on this, you can choose a different height, width and depth for your new cabinets.

If you are planning to go for stock cabinets, make sure you know the size they are available in. The width of most stock cabinets varies between 12 to 26 inches and their height ranges from 12 to 24 inches.

Framed And Frameless Cabinets

After choosing the size, you have to decide whether you want to go for framed cabinets or unframed cabinets.

Framed cabinets come with a face frame with which the doors are attached. Since the cabinet itself does not support the door, the wood used can be thinner.

For frameless cabinets, the structure of the cabinet is thicker since it supports the door and the drawers.

Material

Wood cabinets are available in a range of colours and styles. However, this depends on the type of material you choose. You can choose from several wood options including oak, maple, hickory, cherry, birch, ash, and pine.

The type of material you choose will directly affect the durability, sturdiness and quality of your cabinets. Since cabinets in the kitchen are prone to grease, grime and moisture accumulation, it is better to choose good quality wood that is pre-treated for moisture and grease resistance.
